Augmento in D

Augmento in D, sold to Chancellor Robert Johnson

I am very happy and deeply moved to have sold this painting, Augmento in D, to Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Robert Johnson. His commitment to seeking a sense of humanity as we go out into the world has always resonated with me very deeply, and I endeavor to follow that path. His educational philosophy centers on empathy and innovative and creative problem solving, and entrepreneurial thinking.

The name of the painting This painting presents a warm, uplifting sensation. The luminosity of color springs to life, the paint surface and embedded flax fibers create a richness of textures. The layers interact to create a rich, reverberant life. The name of the painting, Augmento in D, refers to the rising feeling that the work exudes. The yellows are warm and rising, and yet carry a weight and importance. Blue, which can often feel cold and passive, is luminous, warm and glowing in this work.

Music and the key of D major In music, the key of D Major is one of victory and rejoicing, and the work speaks to fighting for and achieving our dreams; dreams that speak of rich connections of life as felt through the interweavings of colors, textures and materials. As Chancellor Johnson’s father said, “The key to life is not living but knowing how to live.” Thus it is important that our dreams carry with them a sense of warmth and humanity. It is my hope that this painting may, in some small way, help us to live with a greater sense of humanity and interconnectedness as we fight for our dreams.

Hanging the Painting The backing fabric for the painting itself is linen which is prepared in the traditional manner with rabbit skin glue and oil primer. Paintings prepared in this technique flow with the changes in weather. The heavy cotton fabric to which it is sewn also changes and breathes, but in a different rhythm. Thus, although the painting is sewn to the cloth, it is not fully bound to it. Instead it is connected in a way that allows the painting to move in accordance to its own nature, and in relation to the backing fabric. You will notice some small shifts and changes throughout the year, these changes are a part of the natural life cycle of the painting.

Details There are many details throughout the work that allow you to view it from near an far. These details emerge through the prolonged painting process and allow the work to be viewed for many years, always with new sensations to be discovered. This particular detail I fondly refer to as the ‘donut.’ It does look good enough to eat!

Resonance The painting creates a resonant, immanent space through the many layers and textures, as well as the different materials encapsulated through the work.
